BEFORE/AFTER
BEFORE: You can see in the before photo, KW’s client was shortening her legs by wearing skinny jeans. When you are top heavy you want to draw the attention downward. Also by wearing a bright color on top the focal point of her outfit became on the upper body. This created the illusion that her body-shape is an upside triangle, and that her body is unbalanced.
AFTER: Win #1 - She achieved one goal by defining her waist by tucking in her top! Win #2 - Switching to a full length, boot-cut jean helps elongate her legs which helps draw the attention downward and balances the top half.
*Please note you can wear color on the top half but it has to be the right style of top w/ the right bottoms.
Styling Tips for Proportional
TOPS
The right neckline for the this body type needs to play down the wide shoulders and/or bust. U-or V-necklines are great. Other necklines such as asymmetric, v-neck, & halter are great choice as well. Do opt for wide straps on tank tops, camis, etc. Don’t do thin straps as it will make you look wider.
PANTS
Any style pants that will accentuate and add volume to the bottom half are essential. Baggy trousers, combat, flares, and culotte are great examples. Pleats are a great design detail that naturally adds volume. Jean styles that flare from the knee are great such as bootleg, wide. Also boyfriend style, and baggy jeans to give the illusion of more shape on the bottom half.
SKIRTS
Great skirt styles are full, A-line, mini, and pencil. Finding skirts that have different detail or prints in the design will also be another trick on the eye that help draw the attention downward.
DRESSES
Look for dresses that flare from the waist or hips. These would also be consider an empire waist or drop waist. Details on the lower part of the dress, such as patterns, and prints will draw the eye downwards and away from the shoulders. Also your choice of color.
